The Island

Colonsay is one of the smallest islands of the Southern Hebrides at 10 miles long and two wide.

It has a long history stretching back to 7000 bc and has been home over the years to the monk followers of St Columba and to Iron Age warriors who left a string of forts, or duns, which are clearly visible today.

However it is Colonsay’s natural beauty and wildlife that draw people back time and time again. The stunning beauty of Kiloran Bay, one of the most picturesque of Hebridean beaches, and the miles of other sandy bays waiting for your to discover them .

Seals, otters, wild goats, golden eagles and wonderful plant life provide the backdrop for your stay.

Just make sure that you are equipped to enjoy all there is to offer no matter what the weather.

Four seasons in one day is the saying in these parts and so it often is. Walk across the strand to Oransay in snow at Easter and come back two hours later in brilliant sunshine. Nothing surprises.

We've picnicked on the beach in April and swum in the sea in October (not for long).

Don't forget the people. It is an island full of characters who are happy to help you get the most out of your stay.
